A room with a view is always desirable, but researchers are now saying that it's what you're actually seeing from your home's window that counts. People with birds, shrubs, and trees in their neighborhood are less likely to experience depression, anxiety, and stress, according to a new study conducted by researchers at the University of Exeter, the British Trust for Ornithology, and the University of Queensland.

The study tracked 270 people from all ages, ethnicities, and socioeconomic backgrounds. It found that, regardless of whether people lived in an urban or suburban area, spending time outdoors was beneficial to mental health. In particular, lower levels of depression, anxiety, and stress were linked to the number of birds people could see from their house in the afternoon. The types of birds did not matter. "This study starts to unpick the role that some key components of nature play for our mental well-being, Dr. Daniel Cox, the lead researcher said. "Birds around the home, and nature in general, show great promise in preventative health care, making cities healthier, happier places to live." Looks like we have another must-have item to add to our house-hunting list!
