Sharon of Cupcakes & Cutlery {Blogger Interview}

I am so very stoked to share my blogger interview with Sharon. Cupcakes and Cutlery is one of my all time fave blogs. I adore Sharon, her style and how supportive she is. I got to meet this lovely lady in NYC at the Martha Stewart event and I’m antsy for another chance to chitty chat with her in person.

Simply put- she’s awesome.

Why did you start blogging?

I started blogging because I needed something creative to do.  I was working in a job that I wasn’t passionate about.  My sister-in-law and I both really enjoyed throwing family parties and were constantly online and sharing fun ideas with each other.  We decided to start the blog as a creative outlet for the both of us and try to help share ideas with other like minded people who may not have the time to spend on the internet looking for the coolest things.  This was pre-kids.  Now I have to fight them for the computer and don’t get to browse sites like I would like to!

What does your business name stem from?

I came up with the name because our blog was meant to be a resource of the best in part supplies.  We would cover everything from cupcakes to cutlery and everything in between.  I also thought is was good representation of the two styles of my SIL and I.  She was much more in to the traditional, cute, popular things and I was (and still am) in to the more edgy, artistic, conceptual things.  The blog has really changed since I first started it.  But the name is part of my brand so I keep it.  It certainly does confuse people, though.  People ask me all the time if I make cupcakes.

Take us through a typical day:

A typical day involves me sitting down for my morning cup of coffee at the computer trying to get all my social media stuff set up for the day.  My posts are always scheduled but the social media stuff must be done day of.  I have two boys (ages 4 and 6) so the majority of my day is shuttling them wherever they need to go, play with them, feed them, you know – mom duty.  I may try to shoot diy’s or work on a post in the afternoon but it all hinges on their moods and activities.  No day is the same.

What’s on your blog playlist, what songs keep you motivated?

Hmmmm, my blog playlist.  I find that when writing a post music actually bothers me which I never thought I would say.  I do listen to music when shooting recipe posts or diy tutorials though.  I have an ipod in the kitchen where I do all that stuff that is like one huge mix tape.  I made a playlist for the drive to Palm Springs for vacation this summer and I just put it on shuffle and go to work.  I’m super in to Twin Shadow so there is a lot of that on there, I am obsessed with U.S. Royalty, Local Natives (I can’t wait for their new one out later this month!), and Wild Nothing.  But Santigold really gets me moving.

What a few of your favorite sites?

I only read three blogs daily due to my tight schedule with the kids:  Hank and HuntA Fabulous Fete and You Are My Fave.  When I get more time I check out, A House in the HillsSweet Thing, and Sitting in a Tree Events.

Favorite online/blog moment thus far:

Being asked to contribute some DIYs to one of my favorite sites. And really, all the “friends” I’ve made.  For the most part everyone one is super supportive and I love connecting with people.

Leave us with a blogging tip to inspire fellow bloggers.

 I always need to remind myself of this.  You own your blog.  You are in control.  Make sure to keep it fun or there is no reason to do it.  If you want to post 3 days a week, you can.  Don’t let it become so much of a “job” that you lose site of what was important to you in the first place.
